Preparing for Postpartum

With all the anticipation and preparation focused on the birth experience, it's astonishing how little attention is given to the crucial postpartum period. As a new parent, the overwhelming reality of being ill-prepared hit me when we arrived home with our precious newborn. Despite having all the necessary physical items, we quickly realized that mental and emotional readiness were equally important. The barrage of instructions on feeding, pumping, diapering, and the lack of time to process a traumatic birth left us feeling bewildered and exhausted. Thankfully, my parents were there for support, but even they found themselves navigating the complexities of modern parenting after three decades. This eye-opening experience fueled my passion to become a doula and advocate for comprehensive postpartum support. Today, I'm excited to share a free postpartum planning worksheet as a valuable resource to initiate these vital conversations that often go overlooked.

Preparing Pets for Baby's Arrival

For people without children, their pets are their babies. So it’s understandable that an animal’s world is turned upside down when their parents are suddenly so consumed with this new loud helpless creature.

In planning for your postpartum period, remember to include other family members in the preparations, including pets! Here are some ways that I recommend preparing pets (specifically cats and dogs) for baby’s arrival:

I Believe in the Magic of Birth

What do I mean by “the magic of birth”? I like to think of pregnancy as akin to being a high priestess. communing with the divine. She has strong intuition and is recognized as a wise leader. She communicates with the divine and is shown favor. The womb is a place of creation–if that’s not magic, then I don’t know what is.
