What is your doula style? |
As prepared as we all want to be for birth, it’s an unpredictable event with tons of variables, and there is no one-size-fits-all choice that works for every experience. That’s why I like to emphasize that a birth plan is an outline of your preferences, rather than a step-by-step guide. My goal is to empower you to make the best decisions for yourself, even if it means changing your mind about your preferences. I want to empower every person I work with to make whichever choice is right for them by offering physical, emotional, and informational support.

Why did you choose to train with Doula Trainings International?
When I was searching for an organization to train with, I wanted to find one with a focus on service and diversity. DTI’s commitment to reproductive justice and the community was just what I was looking for and more. Through the curriculum, I became even more aware of and passionate about the eliminating the disparities among reproductive care throughout differing communities.

How would you support me in labor?
My support begins long before labor actually begins. During our two prenatal meetings that are included with the birth support package, we will get to know each other, lay out your birth preferences in a plan, including any comfort measures you’d like to try. During labor, I help by giving you emotional and physical support while advocating for you and your preferences as discussed in your birth plan.
How do you include my partner in support?
If you have a partner who would also like to support you in labor, we can discuss and even practice some comfort measures for them to help with. Sometimes the partner plays more of an emotional support role while I physically support, or vice versa. It’s important for partners to be on the same page, so we’ll make sure we’re well informed of the plan once baby is on the way!
I'm planning to have an epidural. What kind of support would you give then?
In addition to pain management during labor, my support encompasses your entire birthing experience, from helping your birth team be on the same page about your preferences to setting the ambiance of the room with music or essential oils, as well as emotional and informational support. Even with an epidural, you’ll still have to push! Based on our previous discussions, I’ll be there to encourage you through this phase in the way that supports you best.

How do you give postpartum support?
Once baby is born, your journey is just beginning. The first weeks home with baby are a huge adjustment as you’re getting to know this new person you just brought into the world. For postpartum support, my role is to set you up for success in your new life as a parent. This means that, as an independent support person who is not a relative, I help out with things that have taken a backseat while you bond with baby, such as household chores and meal prep. I can also help with any newborn care questions as well as give you the chance to rest and shower.

Can you help with breastfeeding
Yes, breastfeeding support is one of the many things I focus on assist with during the early days with baby. Not only do I have the training necessary to help, but I also have first hand experience with some of the struggles (and solutions!) that can be faced when establishing breastfeeding.
